Committees - Opportunies to Serve Within the Church

You do not need to be a member of Immanuel United Church of Christ to serve on our committees (except consistory). All are welcome to participate in the full life of the church.

Caring & Sharing ministers to people who are already within the church family. We send cards to shut-ins, bulletins to folks who miss Sundays, care packages to individuals who are struggling, and we sing to folks in nursing homes. This little music ministry (as we call it) emphasizes singing favorite hymns during seasons that aren’t Christmas so that seniors have music all year.

Christian Education develops the classes and programs that promote teaching and understanding of the Bible and of Christian discipleship. This committee is responsible for Adult Christian Education including Sunday School and book studies as well as children’s Christian Education.

Christian Education is already looking for teachers to lead the little ones in a short Bible study in the fall and spring semesters.

Fellowship Committee plans events that promote Christian unity and friendship outside the context of worship. In addition to the weekly fellowship time that follows the worship service, throughout the year we enjoy such events as the Hanging of the Greens/ Christmas decoration, the Lenten movie, Easter breakfast, the Strawberry Festival, and the autumn picnic at Patapsco Valley State Park. This year we will also enjoy a barbeque at a members’ house as well as a Talent Show.

Financial Resources takes care of the church’s finances. They also propose the church’s budget for the year.

Physical Resources maintains and improves the church facility. In the past year they have been instrumental in installing new windows in the fellowship hall downstairs, re-tiling most of the floors outside the sanctuary, and repairing the chimney. Since Immanuel shares its building rather liberally with twelve step programs and community groups, this small group of dedicated people actually do a great deal of service for folks outside of the immediate church family.

Proclamation tries to increase the reputation and specific mission of Immanuel United Church of Christ to the community so that all may know that there’s a place where they are welcome. This committee could also be called the publicity or evangelism . Proclamation finds creative ways such as postcards, magnets, and banners to reach out to the Catonsville area as well as to Baltimore. We make sure that we have a presence at Pride Festival and this year we’re planning to go to the Catonsville Arts & Crafts Festival. Proclamation tries to establish the link between God’s inclusive welcome and those who are looking for a church family. We especially take seriously that our mission entails a specific outreach to the GLBTQ community and their families as well as other marginalized folks.

Service Committee is the social justice wing of our system and they do a variety of important work on behalf of the church family. They plan the monthly special offerings. They propose the budget suggestions for our benevolences. They are responsible for the monthly moments of mission which emphasize the work of the church and its members in the world. This committee also organizes and runs annual Alternative Gift Fair in time for the holidays. They also throw the annual party for the guys at Earl’s Place. From year to year they also organize different outreaches including work days at Habitat for Humanity.

Worship Committee plans the worship and music for the weekly service in conjunction with the pastor for 3/4 of the year. We choose hymns, discuss how to make things run more smoothly, and how to implement new ideas.

While the Capital Campaign fund raising is long over, the work of implementing the improvements continues. Our thanks go to the Property Committee for all their hard work. Most recently, we have seen brighter hallways with new tile and lights, we have new windows on the lower level of the church, the front of the sanctuary had the old carpet removed and the wood refinished, the parking lot drain was rebuilt, and the Fireside Room chimney has been repaired and a gas log fire installed. Wow! It took a lot of meetings with contractors to receive quotes and oversee the work. Still on the list to be done are the new sanctuary carpet, more Fireside Room work, and the new sign out front.
